Description

Capenter ants are one of the many types of ants that can be found almost anywhere in the world. Carpenter ants are large, wood infesting and are found through the country. They are especially troubesome in the Northwest where they are the number one wood destroying pest.

The ants can be identified either by visually spotting them or by finding their piles of sawdust that is left behind when the workers push the wood aside to make a nest. Sometimes you can even hear them scurrying in the walls. Generally, carpenter ants prefer soft moist or rotten wood, but will nest in dry wood if needed. They do not actually consume wood like termites do, but instead carve out the wood to make nests.

How to Eliminate Carpenter Ants

First, the nest must be located. This can be done by tracing a line of ants back to their nest. If you are following a trail that eventually fans out, you are probably looking at the feeding ground side of the line. In the opposite direction the line should lead to an old stump, a crack in the foundation, a hole in the ground or some other entry point into the nest. A pyrethrin aresol can be used to destroy ant in the nest once it is located. A small hole may need to be drilled into a call or foundation to successully spray the nest. Also, if the nest is exposed, a vacuum cleaner can be used to clean up all of the ant. Just be sure to destroy them from the vacuum pickup/clean-out bin.
