Description

Fire ants are one of the many types of ants that can be found almost anywhere in the world. Fire ants can sting using formic acid which they carry and inject into their victims. They have a reddish, brown or yellow color. They are found predominantly in the southern states and along the Mississippi. The fire ant is well known for its attack. The fire ants gang up on their victim and bite and sting. They have been know to kill small animals and seriously injure larger animals, including people.

Fire ant mounds can be built in most any type of soil, but the ants prefer open, sunny areas such as lawns, parks, pastures, meadows and cultivated fields. Depending on the type of soil, mounds can be up to 18 inches high. They can also be formed in rotting logs, around stumps and trees and in or under buildings.

How to Eliminate Fire Ants

The best way to eliminate fire ants is to find the nest. By poisoning the nest, the queen will be killed and it is more likely that the nursury will not produce more workers to replace any stragglers that are killed. The nest should be circled with insectide dust a few inches from the opening. The workers will track poison into the nest on their hairs and feet. Most insecticides work including granuales and liquids. Diazinon is often used.

Make sure that holes and cracks are sealed to keep ants out of the house. Food should be cleaned from counters and floors as well. If a nest is found in the walls, a small nail hole can be made and dust injected into the hole. The hole should be plugged after it is injected.

Be sure to clean any surface or utensils that may come in contact with poisons.
