Description

More than any other insect, the flea has a storied history of transmitting disease and death. Because they feed on rats, bubonic plague is a spread throughout the rodent population and then when feeding on a human can spread disease. Although bubonic plague is now uncommon, other diseases transmittd are typhus and tularemia. They are also carriers of tape worm.

Adults seek out dark, warm and moist spots. If exposed, they try to burrow immediately ito cracks, dirt, sand or carpet.
 

How to Eliminate Fleas

Eliminating fleas can be a long and difficult process. Any animal or human bedding material should be thoroughly cleaned or destroyed. The larvae may be dormant until a suitable host is nearby. Wash items with strong soap and dry in strong sunlight. Check around the outide for bird, rat or mice nests. Any nests around the house, attic, in cracks, basement or chimney must be removed and destroyed.

Inside, dust and debris should be removed and area cleaned and vacuumed. Steam cleaning may be used on carpeting. Dusting a crawl space and attic may be needed as well.
