Description

There are three distinct types of termites: subterranean, dampwood and drywood termites. Each must be managed differently.

Subterranian termites live in the ground and travel through dirt tubes to a wooden structure. There are three types of subterranian termites: Reproductive (wings, black, 1/2 inch), Workers (white/dark heads, 1/4 inch) and Soldiers (1/2 inch, elongated head).

Dampwood Termites have two types: Repoductives (light brown, long wings) and Soldiers (3/4 inch long, dark heads).

Drywood Termites also have three types: Reproductive , Workers and Soldiers. The drywood termite as you might expect, does not need contact with the ground and can be found in dry areas.

Distinguishing a termite from an ant is easy if you are able to examine the body. An ant always has three distint body parts, while a termite only has two.

How to Eliminate Termites

For subterranian termites, only chemical termiticides have been proven consistently and then only when the nest has been located.

Treating dampwood termintes is as easy as eliminating the moisture. The infested wood whould be replaced and the termites can not survive.

Treating drywood termites typically involves "tenting" an entire structure and fumigating. Though there are alternatives including spot treatment with sodium borate.
